Clockwork AMA aims to decentralise the tourism industry in Amsterdam, to relieve the pressure in city centre of Amsterdam and create a circular tourism model in the region, through the sustainable reuse of land. To do this, our project proposes the transformation of wastescapes in the region into attractions that trigger tourists to explore the AMA (Amsterdam Metropolitan Area). We propose to use the Stelling van Amsterdam as a catalyst to connect existing tourist attractions and the transformed wastescapes in the region, thus forming a bold, spatially significant ‘AMA Ring’. A design toolkit with strategies, policies, and urban rules was created to implement the vision in region, and four interventions were detailed out to explain our project. The regeneration of wasted landscapes through the integration of a strong circular tourism model can transform the perception of tourism in the region and create a balanced and attractive AMA.
Tourism and Wastescapes
There is a high concentration of tourist activity and associated services in the city centre of Amsterdam, leading to extreme levels of pressure in the area and supression of the touristic potential of other regions in the AMA. Clockwork AMA proposes to decentralise tourism to the AMA region, by utilising wastescapes in the region. The spatial analysis and design integrates values of ciruclar tourism and circular landuse, by identifying common development potentials.
How can the transformation of wastescapes enable the shift to a circular tourism sector to create a balanced and attractive AMA ?

The decentralisation of the tourism in the AMA can make use of the wastescapes that are in transition within the AMA, and transform them into new tourist attractions or ancillary facilities that support existing attractions. The vision uses the Stelling van Amsterdam as a catalyst to connect existing tourist attractions and the transformed wastescapes in the region, thus forming a bold, spatially significant ‘AMA Ring’. The tourism image of Amsterdam is also transformed from a one-point attraction to series of attractions connected by the ‘AMA Ring’, thus relieving the pressure on the city centre of Amsterdam.
