Hello! I am Preetika, an urban designer based in Rotterdam. I work at the intersection of spatial strategy and urban design, on themes related to climate adaptivity, circularity, energy transition and densification. Welcome to my portfolio!

#Research
I work on projects that are transcalar and adaptable, giving the opportunity to test regional spatial strategies on the local scale. For example, in the Circular Covai project, we proposed a spatial circular vision that was implemented across four scales: city, neighbourhood, subsite and pilot projects. This transcalarity tests the validity of such circular concepts and its impact on the local communities as well.
What is my expertise?
#ClimateAdaptivity
In today's unchecked urban growth and development, Indian cities face challenges related to water management, drought, heat islands, lack of coastal defenses and so on. How can we make Indian cities climate adaptive and water sensitive? How can we combine the need for better environment protection with ongoing urban development? In the Weaving with Water project, we proposed a water driven spatial framework towards a climate-proof Kochi, that addresses the intersections between four layers: Ecology, Infrastructure, Community, and Governance.
#UrbanCircularity
In an era where the urgency of climate change and the need to shift to sustainable means of resource production and consumption is of utmost importance, it is pertinent that the built environment reflects this. As an urban designer, I have worked on projects where we aimed to 'close the loops'-i.e, optimising resource cycles through spatial intervention. For example, in the Tragel in Transition project, we proposed a Circular Maker's District that spearheads the city's transition to circularity.
#EnergyTransition
Energy and Space have a reciprocal relationship. This spatial dimension is extremely important in the context of energy transition since renewable energy needs 100 to 1000 times more space to be produced than non-renewable energy sources. I believe that through creative spatial strategies, we can pave the way for an adaptive, inclusive and collaborative energy transition. My graduation thesis, ‘Geographies of Power-Spatial Strategies for a ‘just’ energy transition in Tamil Nadu’ explored the spatial dimension of energy transition, with a framework for developing adaptive energy production landscapes.
#UrbanDensification
At De Zwarte Hond, I work on projects related to urban densification, like the Haarlemmermeer Densification Vision and Regio Groningen-Assen Urbanisation Strategy. In the coming years, Netherlands is gearing up for an unprecedented demand for afforable, accessible housing. How can we use this opportunity to create liveable, attractive inner city environments? How can densification be a tool to achieve this? Find out more here.
